RCOG AND MALAYSIAN PARTNERS ANNOUNCE INNOVATIVE FIVE-YEAR TRAINING PROGRAMME TO ADVANCE THE CARE OF WOMEN AND GIRLS
14 Oct 2025
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG)
and PROGEN (Persatuan Obstetrik & Ginekologi Nasional MOH Malaysia) are
proud to be entering a new partnership to deliver a structured obstetrics and
gynaecology training programme, supported by Malaysia’s Ministry of Health and
the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.
Set to begin in July 2026, the five-year programme will
support up to 250 Malaysian O&G doctors, under the Parallel Pathway
initiative. The aim of the collaboration is to enhance the training of doctors
working in women’s health, increasing the number of O&G specialists and
improving care for women and girls in Malaysia.
Delivered through RCOG Centres of Excellence, the training
will align with UK standards using the RCOG Curriculum, MRCOG examinations and
RCOG Training ePortfolio. Participants will also have access to the Training
Evaluation Form (TEF) survey and the annual review of competence progression
(ARCP) process.
Dr Ranee Thakar, RCOG President, said:
The RCOG is committed to advancing the health of women
and girls by supporting obstetricians and gynaecologists around the world to
deliver safe, high-quality care. This exciting new initiative with our partners
in Malaysia reflects our commitment to this.
Through the collaboration, the College and our partners
will elevate the standards of O&G training in Malaysia, ensuring there are
more specialists equipped with internationally recognised competencies.
We are very grateful to the Malaysian Ministry of Health
and Academy of Medicine of Malaysia for supporting this important work, which
will improve health outcomes for women and girls in their country.
Kate Lancaster, RCOG Chief Executive, said:
The signing of this agreement and the launch of the
programme in July 2026 represents the culmination of several years of
collaborative work to develop an internationally recognised, high quality
structured training programme.
Through this world first partnership, we have a unique
opportunity to expand the reach of high quality obstetrics and gynaecology
training across Malaysia and to help increase the number of O&G specialists
towards the 2030 targets set by the Ministry of Health.
This demonstrates RCOG’s commitment to a continued and
strong presence in Malaysia and this joint training programme is very much at
the heart of our activities. We are honoured to be working with such
prestigious Malaysian partners renowned for their commitment to the highest
standards of clinical excellence and patient care.
Parallel Pathway is a set of training programmes by the
Ministry of Health Malaysia for medical specialties in collaboration with the
Academy of Medicine of Malaysia and local medical associations, namely PROGEN.
The RCOG has a long-standing relationship with Malaysia, dating back to 1948, and is proud to now have 608 Malaysian Fellows, Members, and Associates. In 2023, the RCOG held our first membership ceremony and established a MRCOG Part 3 examination centre in Malaysia. The RCOG has also selected Malaysia to host the 2027 World Congress.

PARALLEL PATHWAY SPECIALIST TRAINING PROGRAMME
Malaysia’s
Parallel Pathway Specialist Training Programme is now governed by a robust,
multi-tiered structure led by the Ministry of Health. The Parallel Pathway
Specialist Training Main Committee, chaired by the Deputy Director General of
Health (Medical) is the central committee, providing strategic direction and
oversight. Each specialty is supported by a Technical Committee that ensures
training quality, monitors trainee progress, and enforces compliance with
Specialty-Specific Requirements (SSR) set by the Malaysian Medical Council. In
Obstetrics and Gynaecology, this includes close collaboration with PROGEN and
the Academy of Medicine Malaysia.
The Academy of
Medicine Malaysia plays a vital role as the Conjoint Management Secretariat,
supporting coordination, documentation, and standardisation across disciplines.
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) now assumes a more
proactive role, not just as an exam provider, but as a strategic partner in
quality assurance and programme development. This governance model ensures
transparency, consistency, and alignment with both national priorities and
global standards, strengthening our commitment to producing competent, ethical,
and compassionate specialists for Malaysia’s future.
On 12 October 2025,
we marked a historic milestone with the signing ceremony of the strategic
collaboration between PROGEN, RCOG, and the Academy of Medicine Malaysia. Held
at the AMM Auditorium, this event celebrated our shared commitment to advancing
O&G specialist training through the Parallel Pathway. The presence of
esteemed leaders and technical committee members reaffirmed our collective
effort to build a future-ready healthcare workforce through international
collaboration and national stewardship.
